in a pickle

Why does everything taste of cinnamon and pickles?

Good question, younger sister. Let me look into that with the journalistic diligence of a Lois Lane (but without all the needing to be rescued by a superhero who is also her co-worker malarkey) type character.

Actually, I said something along the lines of “no it doesn’t”

I was wrong. And, having admitted this, feel the need to write a letter.

Drowning cucumbers in a liquid flavoured with cinnamon is certainly not a mainstream activity. Firstly, it looks like a Victorian medical experiment. And secondly, eugh, just eugh.

But calling them pickles may have been what tipped it for me. To me, pickle is a delicious relish that transforms a sandwich, not a curio from a traveling circus.

What you’re thinking of there is a gherkin.

The gherkin is a variety of cucumber grown for the purpose of being drenched in weirdness and displayed in jars. It is also a building in the City of London. If I lived in that building I would never have to see a gherkin again.

Moderation is definitely the key when it comes to gherkins.
